Day 16: Death Valley National Park

Today we had a long drive out of California, through Nevada, and into Arizona. We originally wanted to visit Death Valley National Park while we were in California, but weren't sure it would work. We decided to make our route go through the park today. I can attest that it is actually the hottest, driest, biggest park in the U.S. It was so hot! It got up to 113 degrees while we were there! Of course there were narrow, twisting roads to get to it around the mountains at elevations of up to 5,000 feet, and then when we got there we visited the visitor center, which is at sea level. We visited Badwater Basin, which is the lowest point in North America at 282 feet BELOW sea level! It's so dry that there are salt flats and we walked on some, but only for a few minutes due to the extreme heat. On the way out we saw Zabriskie Point but didn't walk out due to the heat. We treated the kids to Dairy Queen, their favorite, after that heat and then headed to our KOA in Arizona!
